Press Release: Herbaland Opts for Compostable Packaging
Breaking Up and Breaking Down: Herbaland Naturals Opts for Compostable Packaging Over Plastic
Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, April 12, 2019 — Herbaland Naturals launched a new packaging initiative aimed at reducing plastic waste. The company is swapping traditional plastic pouching material for a new substrate that is 100% compostable for use on Herbaland’s best-selling product: Vegan Protein Gummies. The new packaging will be compostable both at home and in industrial facilities.
"Although we have had recyclable packaging for several years, we know that is not enough to curb the global waste crisis," explained Herbaland CEO, Musharaf Syed. "We need to push the boundaries, to do more - and compostable packaging was the answer for us."
For the last 50 years, global consumption of plastics has continued to rise, and people are starting to take note of the effect the resulting waste is having on the planet. Once plastic reaches the waste stream, it is unable to breakdown fully and winds up in landfills, oceans, and other natural habitats. Compostable alternatives on the other hand, like the one Herbaland is introducing to its brand, can completely breakdown. The breakdown of compostable plastics is usually between 90 and 120 days, compared to an estimated 100 to 500 years for petroleum-based plastics.
LAUNCHING AT THE VANCOUVER SUN RUN
The compostable pouches are making their debut at the 2019 Vancouver Sun Run post-race party -- where Herbaland is a sponsor this year. "Sampling is a fantastic way for us to share our products with consumers; however, it usually generates a lot of waste," Herbaland spokeswoman Heidi Volpov explains. "Debuting our compostable packaging at the race was a natural fit: it allows us to educate consumers on composting while significantly reduce the environmental impact of our presence at the show!"
A MEASURABLE DIFFERENCE
Based off last year's sales of Vegan Protein Gummies, Herbaland estimates that this change will eliminate around 900 pounds of plastic from the waste stream.
"We know how important this issue is to our customers because this issue is important to us," said Syed, "We are dedicated to being a part of the solution. We are excited to be one of the first companies in the nutraceutical space to make this commitment."
Herbaland is also working towards an eco-friendly solution for their vitamin bottles, which the company hopes to launch in Summer 2019. Herbaland hopes that other companies will see their example and follow suit, Syed emphasizes, “The change starts with us, but if other companies see our example and follow us that doubles, then quadruples the amount of plastic we are removing from the waste stream and will make a measurable impact on the future of our planet."
